Donate your car by Dec. 31 in Dallas for this year’s tax break

In Dallas–Fort Worth, the IRS counts your car donation on the day it’s picked up, not when you schedule. Book your free pickup now so we can tow it by December 31.

If you want your car donation to count for this tax year, the IRS goes by the date your vehicle is physically picked up—not when you call or fill out the form. That means in Dallas, your car must be towed away on or before December 31 to claim the deduction on this year’s return. To make that happen, Wheels for Wellness works with Heritage for the Blind to schedule fast, free pickup Monday–Saturday across the DFW Metroplex. We recommend you schedule 3–5 business days before December 31 so your slot is guaranteed.

Based in Dallas, Wheels for Wellness helps turn your unwanted car into support for people who are blind or visually impaired—right here and nationwide—through Heritage for the Blind, a trusted 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446). Whether you’re in Lakewood, Oak Cliff, Plano, Frisco, Arlington, Irving, Garland, Mesquite, or anywhere in the DFW Metroplex, we’ll pick up your running or non-running vehicle at no cost, with no inspection or repairs needed. After your car sells, you’ll receive the written acknowledgment you need for your taxes (IRS Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500), but your deduction year is locked in as of the pickup date. Start now—it takes about two minutes.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2‑minute donation form or call

2 minutes

Share your contact info, vehicle location, and basic details about your car, truck, SUV, or van in the Dallas area. It’s quick, no VIN or title research needed right now. Be sure to mention you need the car picked up by December 31 for this year’s tax deduction.

2

Choose your pickup window in DFW

5 minutes

A scheduling specialist confirms your Dallas–Fort Worth location and offers available pickup days, Monday–Saturday. To ensure a slot, we recommend you book 3–5 business days before December 31, especially in busier areas like North Dallas, Plano, and Arlington.

3

Prepare keys, title, and access

10–15 minutes

Before your tow day, clear personal items from the vehicle, locate the title if available, and ensure the car is accessible in your driveway, apartment lot, or workplace garage. Non-running vehicles are fine—we’ll handle towing at no cost anywhere in the DFW Metroplex.

4

Vehicle is picked up (your IRS donation date)

15–30 minutes

On pickup day, the tow driver meets you or follows your instructions for a no-contact handoff. The IRS counts this pickup date as your donation date. If it’s on or before December 31, the deduction applies to this tax year, even though the car sells later.

5

Receive your tax acknowledgment by mail

Within weeks of sale

After Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment for your records. For vehicles over $500, you’ll be issued IRS Form 1098‑C so you can claim the deduction when you file, using the pickup year as your deduction year.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Pickup date = donation date

For federal taxes, the deductible year is based on the date your car is actually picked up, not the date you schedule your donation. A pickup on or before December 31 is required to claim the deduction for that tax year.

Form 1098‑C for vehicles over $500

If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind will issue IRS Form 1098‑C. This form shows the gross proceeds from the sale, which is generally the amount you may claim as a deduction when you itemize.

Deduction usually equals sale price

In most cases, the IRS limits your vehicle donation deduction to the amount the charity receives when the car is sold. Your acknowledgment or Form 1098‑C will list this sale price, which you then report when you file your return.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To use your car donation as a tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you claim the standard deduction instead, you generally cannot also claim a separate vehicle donation deduction.

Written acknowledgment timing

Your official written acknowledgment (and Form 1098‑C, if applicable) is mailed after the vehicle sells, which can be weeks later. This does not change your deduction year—the IRS still uses the pickup date as the donation date.

FAQ

If my pickup is scheduled by December 31 but happens in January, which year is my deduction?
The IRS goes by the pickup date, not the scheduling date. If your car is physically picked up in January, the donation applies to the new tax year, even if you booked in December. To claim it for this year, make sure the tow occurs on or before December 31.
How early should I schedule my Dallas car donation before year‑end?
For the DFW Metroplex, we recommend scheduling your pickup 3–5 business days before December 31. This gives us time to secure a Monday–Saturday tow slot that works for you, even in busier areas like Plano, Frisco, Arlington, and central Dallas as the year ends.
Do you accept non‑running or damaged vehicles in Dallas–Fort Worth?
Yes. We accept most vehicles whether they run or not, and there’s no cost to you for towing. No inspection or repairs are required. Just tell us the condition and location anywhere in the DFW Metroplex, and we’ll arrange a free pickup that meets the December 31 deadline.
When will I receive my tax receipt or Form 1098‑C?
After your vehicle is picked up, it will be sold by or for Heritage for the Blind. Once it sells, they’ll mail you a written acknowledgment, and for vehicles over $500, IRS Form 1098‑C. This may arrive weeks later, but your deduction year remains the pickup year.
How much can I deduct for my donated car?
In many cases, your deduction is limited to the amount the vehicle sells for at auction or sale. That amount will appear on your acknowledgment or Form 1098‑C. You then use that figure when you itemize on Schedule A, subject to overall IRS charitable deduction rules.
Is Heritage for the Blind a qualified 501(c)(3) charity?
Yes. Heritage for the Blind is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446). Proceeds from your Wheels for Wellness car donation fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired. This status is what allows you to claim a charitable deduction if you itemize.
Do I need to be present at pickup for my Dallas car donation?
In many Dallas‑area situations, you don’t have to be present if we have access to the vehicle and clear instructions about keys and title. We’ll work with you to arrange a convenient or no‑contact pickup while still making sure your car is towed by December 31 if you need this year’s deduction.
