If your car just failed an emissions or smog test in Dallas, you can still donate it. A failed smog test does NOT disqualify your vehicle from donation with Wheels for Wellness. We partner with Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3), to accept vehicles in almost any condition—including those that won’t pass Texas emissions testing in Dallas County or the surrounding DFW Metroplex.
In Texas, smog and emissions rules mainly apply to private sales and vehicle registration—not charitable donations. When you donate, you’re transferring title to a charity, not selling the car yourself. Heritage for the Blind takes your vehicle as-is, then sells it at auction or to a buyer who will repair it or part it out. You are not required to fix anything first, and you should not spend money on emissions repairs just to donate. We arrange free towing from your home, office, or shop in areas like Plano, Irving, Garland, Arlington, or Oak Cliff, handle the paperwork, and you receive a tax receipt for your federal return.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your failed-smog vehicle
Go online or call to share the basics: year, make, model, mileage, and confirm that it failed a Texas emissions or smog test. Be honest about any other issues—check engine lights, inspection stickers, or non-running status. We routinely accept vehicles that won’t pass inspection anywhere in the DFW Metroplex.
2. Get a fast confirmation that we’ll accept it as-is
We’ll confirm that Heritage for the Blind can take your vehicle even though it failed emissions. Because this is a charitable title transfer, the usual smog rules for private sales don’t apply. You don’t need to repair the car or get it to pass; we accept it in its current condition for donation.
3. Schedule free pickup anywhere in the DFW Metroplex
Choose a convenient pickup time at your home, apartment, or shop in Dallas, Fort Worth, Richardson, Mesquite, Grand Prairie, or nearby suburbs. Towing is free and handled by a professional driver. The car does not have to be drivable or currently inspected, and you won’t pay any towing or processing fees.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if available)
At pickup, you’ll sign the Texas title over to Heritage for the Blind. The driver will guide you on where to sign. If you have keys and the last registration, send those as well, but we can often still help if the car is not running. Keep your license plates and cancel insurance once it’s towed.
5. Vehicle is sold as-is; you receive your tax receipt
Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle as-is at auction or to a buyer who will handle emissions repairs or salvage. After the sale, you’ll receive a federal tax receipt, typically for at least $500. If the sale exceeds $500, you’ll also receive the IRS Form 1098-C details needed for your tax return.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect Texas title
Tip: Donation requires a proper Texas title in your name. If it’s lost, request a duplicate from the Texas DMV before scheduling pickup. The name on the title must match the donor. Small errors, like a misspelling, should be corrected with DMV before you sign it over to Heritage for the Blind.
Outstanding loan or lien still on the vehicle
Tip: If your lender is still listed on the title or you owe money, we usually can’t complete a donation until the lien is released. Contact your lender to confirm the balance is paid and obtain a lien release. Bring that document when the tow truck arrives so the title transfer goes smoothly.
Car is abandoned at a shop or apartment lot
Tip: If the vehicle sits at a mechanic in Dallas, Irving, or Arlington, or in an apartment lot, make sure you’re allowed to authorize towing from that location. Let the shop or property manager know you’re donating it so there are no surprises or tow conflicts when the driver arrives.
Emissions-related tickets or registration issues
Tip: Unpaid tickets or registration holds stay with you, not the car. Donation doesn’t erase past fines, but it does stop future inspection and registration headaches for that vehicle. Check with the court or county if you have outstanding tickets; donation only transfers ownership, not your prior obligations.
