If you’re in Dallas staring at a car with no keys and no title, you can still donate it through Wheels for Wellness. The keys are inconvenient, but the title is the critical piece. Once you’ve requested and received a Texas duplicate title in your name, we can arrange a free tow anywhere in the DFW Metroplex—even if the vehicle doesn’t start and you can’t find the keys. You’ll still receive a tax receipt for your donation, and your gift supports Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Here’s how it works in Texas: first, you apply for a duplicate or replacement title through the Texas DMV or your local county tax office—usually a small fee and about 1–4 weeks processing. While you’re waiting, we can answer questions and help you plan tow access from your driveway, apartment lot, or storage space in places like Oak Cliff, Plano, Arlington, or Garland. When the duplicate title arrives, you sign it over, schedule your free pickup, and our towing partner brings a flatbed that can safely load a keyless vehicle. As long as a tow truck can reach it, missing keys won’t stop your donation from going through.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm your name is on the last Texas title
First, make sure you were the last legal owner on record. If the vehicle was registered in your name in Texas—even if the paper title is lost—you’re usually eligible for a duplicate. If it was never in your name, call us so we can walk through what paperwork the Texas DMV may require before you apply for a replacement title.
2. Apply for a Texas duplicate or replacement title
Visit the Texas DMV website or your local county tax office (Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, or Denton County) to request a duplicate title. The fee is typically modest, and processing often takes 1–4 weeks. Start this step right away; your donation can’t be completed without a valid title in your name, even though the keys are missing.
3. Call Wheels for Wellness while your title is processing
Once your duplicate title request is in, contact Wheels for Wellness. Tell us the car has no keys and exactly where it’s located—driveway in Lakewood, apartment lot in Irving, or storage in Mesquite. We’ll answer questions, note that the vehicle is keyless, and flag your file so a flatbed tow truck is sent when you’re ready to schedule pickup.
4. Get your duplicate title and sign it over for donation
When the Texas DMV mails or issues your duplicate title, sign it exactly as your name appears on the front. We’ll guide you through where to sign so the transfer is smooth. Keep the signed title handy; our towing partner will collect it at pickup or we’ll give you simple mailing instructions if required in your situation.
5. Schedule free keyless pickup anywhere in the DFW Metroplex
With the signed duplicate title ready, we schedule your free tow. Remind us the car has no keys and whether it rolls, steers, or has flat tires. We’ll dispatch a flatbed that can load a non-running, keyless vehicle from most accessible spots around Dallas, Fort Worth, Richardson, Grand Prairie, and nearby suburbs at no cost to you.
6. Complete your donation and receive your tax receipt
After pickup, Wheels for Wellness processes your donation for Heritage for the Blind. You’ll receive a tax receipt—typically at least $500, with IRS Form 1098-C used for deductions over $500. Missing keys do not reduce your eligibility for a tax deduction. As long as the title transfer is clean, your gift and your tax benefit are fully recognized.
Potential complications to watch for
The DMV can’t issue a duplicate title if ownership is unclear
Tip: If the vehicle was never titled in your name, or there’s an old lien listed, the Texas DMV may need extra forms or lien releases. Check this before you apply. Clearing ownership issues first prevents delays so you can sign the duplicate title directly over to Wheels for Wellness when it arrives.
Tight parking or blocked access can stop a flatbed tow
Tip: Keyless vehicles must be reachable by a tow truck. If your car is wedged in a backyard, behind another vehicle, or in a low-clearance garage in Uptown, tell us up front. Sometimes moving another car, getting a gate code, or selecting a specific time window is all it takes to make pickup possible.
Out-of-state or very old titles may need extra steps
Tip: If your last title was from another state or the car is very old and not currently registered in Texas, the duplicate-title process may differ. Call your local Texas DMV or county tax office and explain the situation. Once that’s resolved, the donation process in Dallas works the same—keys or no keys.
Name changes that don’t match DMV records
Tip: If your driver’s license name doesn’t match the DMV’s record for the vehicle due to marriage, divorce, or a legal name change, you may be asked for proof when requesting the duplicate title. Bringing name-change documents to the county tax office can save you a second trip and keep your donation on track.
