Can I donate a car with expired registration in Dallas?

In Dallas–Fort Worth you can still donate a car with expired or lapsed registration. Wheels for Wellness handles the tow, paperwork, and tax receipt so you don’t have to re-register.

You can absolutely donate a car with expired registration in the Dallas area. With Wheels for Wellness, you do not have to renew your registration or pay back fees just to give the vehicle away. As long as you have a valid Texas title in your name, we can accept most cars, even if they’re parked, non-running, or have tags that expired years ago. We’ll arrange free towing anywhere in the DFW Metroplex—whether you’re in Oak Cliff, Plano, Grand Prairie, or near White Rock Lake.

Here’s how it works in Texas: registration status isn’t what transfers ownership—the title does. When you donate, you sign your Texas title over to our benefiting charity partner, Heritage for the Blind, and our towing partner picks up the vehicle at no cost to you. Once it’s picked up, the vehicle becomes the charity’s responsibility. You’ll receive a donation receipt (usually at least $500 for IRS purposes), and for donations over $500 you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C at tax time. We’ll also guide you on notifying the Texas DMV and your county tax office so the state knows you’re no longer the owner.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Check that you have a Texas title in your name

Don’t worry about your expired or lapsed registration—that’s not what we need. Locate your Texas title and make sure your name is listed as the owner. The address can be old and the tags can be years out of date; a valid, signed title is what allows us to legally transfer the vehicle from you to Heritage for the Blind.

2

2. Request your pickup online or by phone

Contact Wheels for Wellness and tell us you’re in the Dallas area with expired tags. We’ll ask a few basics: year, make, model, VIN if handy, and where the car is located (driveway in Richardson, apartment lot in Irving, garage in DeSoto, etc.). We’ll schedule a free tow at a date and time that works for you, often within 24–48 hours.

3

3. Prepare the car for towing—not for driving

You do not need to make the car roadworthy or renew inspection/registration. Just remove personal items, gather your keys if available, and have the title ready. Our professional towing partner will load the vehicle from your driveway, alley, or parking space in places like Mesquite, Arlington, or Carrollton. The car never needs to touch the road with expired plates.

4

4. Sign over the title to Heritage for the Blind

At pickup, you’ll sign your Texas title over to our benefiting 501(c)(3) charity, Heritage for the Blind. The driver can show you exactly where to sign. Once the title is signed and the vehicle is loaded, ownership passes to the charity. From that point, they are responsible for the vehicle—registration, storage, sale, and everything else.

5

5. Get your tax receipt and update the Texas DMV

After the vehicle is sold, you’ll receive a tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind. Most donors can claim at least a $500 deduction; for amounts above that, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C. We’ll remind you to submit a vehicle transfer notice to the Texas DMV and your county tax office (Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, or Denton) so you’re released from future liability and registration notices.

Potential complications to watch for

No title or title not in your name

Tip: Expired registration is fine; a missing or mismatched title is what causes delays. If the title is lost or still in a previous owner’s name, you may need to request a replacement or complete a transfer with the Texas DMV before donating. We can walk you through what’s needed for your situation.

Active lien still listed on the title

Tip: If your Texas title shows a lienholder (bank or finance company), we usually need proof that the loan is paid off before the charity can accept the vehicle. Often this is a lien release letter. Check your paperwork or contact the lender so the title can be cleared and the donation transfer goes smoothly.

Vehicle abandoned or not on your property

Tip: We can’t donate a car simply because it’s sitting in your apartment complex or on a public street. You must be the legal owner with the title in your name and authority to remove it. If the car is in a friend’s driveway in Frisco or a storage lot in Garland, get their permission for towing and confirm you hold the title.

Out-of-state title or complicated ownership

Tip: If your car is in Dallas but still titled in another state or has multiple owners listed, the paperwork can take a bit longer. We can still often help, but signatures from all listed owners may be required. Have a clear photo of the title ready when you contact us so we can give specific guidance before scheduling your free tow.

FAQ

Do I have to renew my Texas registration before I can donate?
No. For a donation, what matters is a valid Texas title in your name, not current tags or inspection. Wheels for Wellness and Heritage for the Blind can accept most vehicles in Dallas even if registration and inspection have been expired for months or years. You can skip the DMV line and let the charity handle things after pickup.
Will I owe back registration fees or penalties if I donate?
You do not need to pay back registration fees just to donate. The charity is taking ownership for charitable use or sale. Once your title is properly signed over and you’ve filed a vehicle transfer notice with the Texas DMV, future registration obligations for that vehicle are no longer your responsibility. Existing government fines unrelated to the car may still be yours.
Can you tow my car if it doesn’t run and the tags are expired?
Yes. We regularly pick up non-running, non-inspected cars with expired plates across the DFW Metroplex—from Lake Highlands to Cedar Hill. The vehicle does not have to start or drive. Our towing partner will load it from your driveway, curb, or parking space and transport it off public roads, so there’s no risk of you getting pulled over for outdated tags.
Is it legal in Texas to donate a car with expired tags?
Yes. Texas law requires current registration only for vehicles being operated on public roads. For a donation, the key legal step is transferring title from you to the charity. Because the tow truck moves the vehicle, you’re not driving it with expired tags. We’ll guide you to also file your vehicle transfer notice so the state reflects the change of ownership.
How does my tax deduction work if my car’s registration is expired?
Registration status doesn’t affect your eligibility for a tax deduction. After the vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind will send you a tax receipt. Many donors can claim at least a $500 deduction; if the charity sells it for more than $500, the exact sale price is reported on IRS Form 1098-C, which you’ll use when preparing your federal return.
What if my car has been sitting for years in a Dallas garage?
That’s exactly the kind of vehicle we handle all the time. Long-expired registration, dead battery, flat tires, or missing inspection sticker are not a problem. As long as you have a clear title in your name and safe access for a tow truck, we can arrange free pickup from your home, storage unit, or garage anywhere around Dallas and the surrounding suburbs.
When does my responsibility for the car officially end?
Your practical responsibility ends once the title is signed over and the vehicle is picked up, but you should also file the Texas vehicle transfer notice soon after. That tells the Texas DMV and your county tax office that Heritage for the Blind now owns the vehicle. From then on, tickets, registration, and insurance obligations tied to that car are no longer yours.
